Arizona Post-Tensioned Concrete Court Construction by General Acrylics

Building Tennis Courts with Post-Tensioned Concrete

Post-tensioned (PT) concrete originated in the 1930s and reached the tennis court industry in the late 1970s in Northern California, an area famous for expansive, unstable soils. The method allows large slabs to be poured without joints, creating one monolithic slab that can bridge over unstable soils or sub-bases.

PT courts are reinforced with greased steel cables inside sheathing, embedded within the slab. After the concrete cures to sufficient strength, the cables are tensioned, holding the slab under constant compression. These courts are largely immune to temperature swings, and should any cracking occur, the tensioned slab keeps the cracks tightly closed and minimal. Upkeep is mostly limited to recoating, and the courts provide a long service life.

Proven Experience Spanning Decades

In 1987, Jonnie Deremo learned this technique from the builder behind the very first PT courts in Northern California, and by 1988 General Acrylics had finished some of Arizona's earliest post-tensioned concrete courts. Today, post-tensioned concrete is the preferred method for new court construction and for rebuilding older courts throughout Arizona and the broader West.

General Acrylics offers over 27 years of hands-on experience in the construction and design-build of post-tensioned concrete courts.
