Running Track Construction and Design
General Acrylics applies hands-on know-how to every phase of running track work — new construction, repairs, resurfacing and striping alike. Our team pairs 43 years of track-building experience with an on-staff Certified Track Builder credentialed by the American Sports Builders Association. That depth lets us work alongside you to create a running track facility aligned with your vision, performance goals and budget.
Constructing or rebuilding a running track demands specialised knowledge to ensure the facility:
- Meets the rules and recommendations of all relevant governing bodies
- Delivers safety and performance for athletes
- Fits into the overall design and planned use of the stadium, site and field
- Uses construction methods and materials that offer the best value within the owner's budget and life-cycle expectations
Running Track Design
Design comes first and ranks among the most important steps in creating a running track facility. A range of factors come into play, including:
- The proposed use of the track and field
- Drainage requirements
- Site size, configuration and elevations
- Safety considerations
- Placement of field events
Running Track Construction
Construction starts once the design is complete and approved. This phase brings the design to life and may include:
- Construction design
- Professional layout to confirm the track length is correct
- Dirt work and grading
- Correct overall site elevations and dimensions so the facility meets all slope requirements and drains properly
- Construction of curbs, field events and drainage
- Construction of the base, which may be asphalt or concrete
Running Track Standard Base
Hot mix asphalt paving has long served as the standard base for a running track, owing to the oval configuration and the historically lower cost of asphalt versus concrete. Where asphalt forms the base, a soils professional should help choose the road base and asphalt depth cross-section to help ensure stability on the existing soils. Event runways are usually built with concrete.
Post Tension Concrete
An increasing number of running tracks are now installed with post-tensioned concrete. This method uses sheathed cables set within the concrete and tensioned to produce a surface that resists cracking. General Acrylics builds the post-tensioned slab without working joints that could transfer through the new synthetic surface. Post-tensioned concrete is typically selected when:
- Soils raise concerns about potential cracking and heaving
- The owner wants long-term value, since the concrete lasts through several removal and replacement cycles of synthetic surfaces without replacing or repairing the underlying base
- Synthetic turf is to be installed on the field, whether at construction or later, because the post-tension slab removes the need for curbs for the nailer board system
Synthetic Surface Application
Selecting between polyurethane surfacing systems and latex comes down to budget, intended use and customer preference.
Striping
Striping performed by an experienced track striping professional is essential, since this part of the project shapes both the facility's overall appearance and its conformance to all governing body requirements.
